Welcome

Dorcas (Wessex) Trust is a Christian Charity registered with the UK Charities Commission (No 1106511)  in 2004 whose aim is:

To serve the poor, the dispossessed and the unwanted people of Manila, capital of the Philippines. We seek to respond to the injunction of the Lord Jesus to serve those whom the ordinary world rejects or ignores and to help them to take some steps towards a fuller life in Christ.

We are challenged by the words of Matthew 25 verses 37-39:

Lord… when did we see you hungry… thirsty… a stranger… naked…. sick…. in prison, …?
and the Lord replied: Whatever you did for the least of these my brothers you did for me.

Typhoons affect Manila and and the Philippines islands regularly.

In December 2013 the megatyphoon Haiyan (known in Philippines as Yolande)  hit the Philippines and caused major destruction in the Island of Leyte in particular. This land of many many islands is vulnerable to such disasters. We have added a page on this website to illustrate some of the impact, though it only had a limited effect on our partner organisations and their people. (This contrasted with September 2009 when a typhoon severely hit the projects we support – Potter's Hand Outreach and Kanlungan Sa Erma) We have acted as a channel for funds for disaster relief on Leyte and Bacloban  to provide funds for emergency food parcels for hundreds of families who lost their homes and possessions and are still living in very cramped emergency accommodation. To see the impact please use the link to go to the page on the typhoon.

Since 2008, Dorcas has provided £78,000 towards the purchase of Benitez House which is now the Reception Centre for Kanlungan. In late 2009, as a result of the floods Potter's Hand Outreach lost the tenancy of their base in Pateros. This was the third time in two years they had had to move their work. The Trustees of Dorcas (Wessex) Trust decided to purchase a house to enable the work to continue. It cost £29,000 and they moved in during February 2010 and are excited that they can expand their ministry. Since then we have supported the running of the two organisations, providing all the funding for Potter's Hand.

Carina wrote in February 2010:

We are busy fixing the house, but VERY VERY happy and excited. We believe that God will use this place to reach more souls in Pateros. We give back all the glory and praise to God, who uses Dorcas supporters to help us achieve our goals. Salamat
